Postdoctoral Research Funding: University of Cambridge and African Institutions Invited to Apply

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund, established in 2012 with the support of The ALBORADA Trust, aims to promote collaborative research endeavors between postdoctoral researchers at the University of Cambridge (or affiliated institutions) and their African counterparts. This fund supports initiatives across various academic disciplines.

To date, the fund has awarded 332 grants, facilitating collaboration between Cambridge scholars and researchers from 35 African countries. Many awardees have leveraged these funds to secure larger awards from esteemed organizations, such as the Royal Society/Leverhulme Awards and the Global Challenges Research Fund.

Funding Details

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund provides grants ranging from £1,000 to £20,000, allocated for:

  • Research expenses (e.g., reagents, fieldwork, equipment)
  • Travel costs for research-related trips between Cambridge and Africa
  • Organizing research training activities in Africa (e.g., courses, workshops)

Condition for the Fund

Applicants must certify the following conditions:

  • Be from the University of Cambridge or African universities/institutes
  • Be at the postdoctoral level or higher
  • Have the endorsement of their respective Heads of Department or equivalent
  • Be formally affiliated with a research group, department, or faculty in their home institutions
  • Intend to continue working at their respective institutions after the ALBORADA award expires

Note: Postgraduate students are not eligible, but limited student funding may be considered if it significantly enhances collaboration between the Cambridge and African Principal Investigators.

  • The final submission should include:
  • A case for support and a lay summary
  • An itemized budget (template provided)
  • A letter of support from the Cambridge PI’s department or faculty
  • A letter of support from the African PI’s department or institution
  • CVs (maximum 2 pages) for the Cambridge and African principal investigators
  • Contact information for two referees with no conflict of interest
  • The online application form allows both Cambridge and Africa-based applicants to log in, update, save, and submit their applications electronically.
