About the research project

This study investigates the complex interactions between molecules and surfaces, a field with diverse applications ranging from industrial catalysis to green energy production and space vehicle re-entry dynamics. Despite well-established theoretical equations, the complexity and amount of atoms and electrons involved make effective surface system modelling difficult, even for the most powerful computers.

Key Objectives of the research

Our research group, which specialises in physics and chemistry, developed the Magnetic Molecular Interferometer (MMI). This novel gadget can coherently regulate and resolve the rotating quantum states of ground state molecules, outperforming conventional laser-based methods. The MMI’s complex interference patterns provide extremely sensitive insights into molecular-surface interactions, revealing precise quantum wave function changes during collisions.

The following Scholarships are ongoing:

  1. Study in Singapore for Free: A*STAR Graduate Scholarship Opportunities
  2. Ongoing Scholarship: Lanzhou University Scholarship 2024 | Fully Funded
  3. Empowering Black British Students: Raheem Sterling Scholarship Opportunities

The fundamental purpose of this EPSRC-funded project (EP/X037886/1) is to derive the molecule-surface interaction potential directly from experimental data. This empirical technique attempts to dramatically improve theoretical models, affecting a wide range of subjects and applications.

Research Activities

As a scholarship recipient, you will participate in:

Using atomic and molecular beams.
Utilise ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic technology, as well as modern measurement instruments and surface science approaches.
Analysing MMI measurements.
Creating numerical simulation tools to analyse MMI data.
You will also work with the theoretical chemistry group at Leiden University, with the chance to travel to Leiden for specialised training.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this award, you must:

  • A 2.1 undergraduate degree in chemistry or a related discipline is required, as is a master’s degree with a minimum overall grade of ‘Merit.’
  • Be entitled to pay tuition fees at the UK rate, as specified by UKCISA regulations.
Possibly offer proof of English language proficiency.
